The central component of the volcano sank in the sea and led to the final form of Santorini as it is nowadays together with the neighboring islands Thirasia, Palea and Nea Kameni. Oia is the second most popular area of Thira. It is situated on the north side of the island at a distance of eleven km from Fira.
