Hersonissos and Malia are two of the most famous towns that are tourist resorts in the Prefecture of Heraklion. The places are notorious for the intense nightlife, the beaches and their youthful atmosphere. Hersonissos is divided into the port area (Limenas Hersonisou), which is flooded with luxury hotels galaxy villas, rooms to let, numerous bars, restaurants and taverns. The village of Hersonissos, which is located south, two kilometers above the port, is also rather touristy. It is developed but at the same time retains several traditional elements, such as beautiful squares, picturesque alleys and traditional buildings.
A walk in Limenas reveals scattered archeological monuments, such as the early Christian Basilica of Agios Nikolaos and the Saracen fountain, with the intricate mosaic decoration on the coastal road. Identified with the frantic youth entertainment, Malia has many features in common with Hersonissos. From May until the end of October, they are flooded with young people who have fun all night in the numerous beach bars and clubs, while during the day they enjoy the sun on the long sandy beaches. The national road Heraklion-Agios Nikolaos essentially divides the settlement in two, with the coastal Malia being full of hotels, rentals, taverns, restaurants and tourist shops, while the old village of Malia is developed touristically, but retains elements of the Cretan tradition. Beautiful houses and squares, narrow alleys, churches and taverns with Cretan cuisine offer another, calmer image in relation to the coastal settlement.
